Sample 1
What does register refer to in discourse analysis?
Register is how formal your language is for the situation you are in. You say Good morning, sir to a principal and something much shorter to a close friend, and both are correct English. Register is choosing the version that fits where you are and who you are speaking to.
Why the other choices are wrong
- A. That is length, which has nothing to do with formality.
- B. That is an element of story, not of language use.
- D. Accuracy is about being correct. Register is about being appropriate, and the two are separate.
