Sample 1

Solve for x in the equation 3(x - 5) = 12.

Answer: B

Solve step by step. First, distribute the 3 across the parentheses: 3(x − 5) = 3x − 15. So 3x − 15 = 12. Add 15 to both sides to keep the equation balanced: 3x = 27. Divide both sides by 3: x = 9. Quick check: 3(9 − 5) = 3 × 4 = 12. Correct. Picture a scale — whatever you do to one side, do exactly the same to the other to keep it level.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A. Probably from forgetting to add the 15 before dividing.
  • C. Doesn't satisfy the equation when plugged back in.
  • D. Result of an arithmetic slip during the division step.

Sample 2

If the sum of three consecutive integers is 72, what is the value of the largest of these three integers?

Answer: C

Consecutive integers are whole numbers in a row: like 5, 6, 7. Call the smallest one x. Then the next is x + 1, and the third is x + 2. Their sum: x + (x + 1) + (x + 2). That's 3 copies of x plus 1 plus 2, which simplifies to (3 × x) + 3. We're told this sum equals 72: (3 × x) + 3 = 72. Subtract 3 from both sides: 3 × x = 69. Divide both sides by 3: x = 23. So the integers are 23, 24, 25, and the LARGEST is 25. Quick check: 23 + 24 + 25 = 72. Correct.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A. 23 is the smallest of the three, not the largest.
  • B. 24 is the middle integer.
  • D. 26 would only fit if the sum were 75, not 72.

Sample 3

What is the circumference of a circle with a radius of 7 units? (Use π ≈ 22/7)

Answer: C

The circumference of a circle is C = 2 × π × r (two times pi times the radius). With radius = 7 and π ≈ 22/7: C = 2 × (22/7) × 7. Notice the 7 in the denominator and the 7 from the radius cancel each other (because 7 ÷ 7 = 1). What's left: 2 × 22 = 44 units. Useful pattern: when π is given as 22/7 and the radius is a multiple of 7, the 7s often cancel and the math gets simple.

Why the other choices are wrong
  • A. 14 is just 2 × 7 (twice the radius) — that's the diameter, not the circumference.
  • B. 22 would be π × r (forgetting the 2), giving half the circumference.
  • D. 154 = 22/7 × 7 × 7 = π × r² — that's the AREA of the circle, not the circumference.
